In countries with low to middle income levels, the majority of the food supply is ensured by smallholders. The women and men who depend on achieving success under tough conditions for a living need access to better seeds, modern crop protection and fertilizers. They also need to make a giant leap towards agricultural technologies that will give them access to better weather data, modern application methods and markets.
The World Food Program has long been a supporter of startups in this area, and the progress is encouraging. But we have to become even stronger together. The UN High Level Meeting on Food Systems 2021 will be an important meeting to forge new partnerships with governments and representatives of civil society along the value chain in the food sector. Efforts to fight hunger have historically not been coordinated enough, adding to a persistent and increasingly serious problem.
