With Carpenter’s home run, Detroit beats Guardians and ties the series

Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run home run off star closer Emmanuel Clase and with it the Detroit Tigers ambushed the Cleveland Guardians 3-0 to tie the American League division series 1-1.

Carpenter sent the ball 423 feet with two outs against Clase, who had not allowed a run since Aug. 30 and led the circuit with 47 saves.

Detroit ace Tarik Skubal covered seven blank rolls to increase his total to 13 this postseason before the cats managed to punish the almost untouchable Clase.

Jake Rogers singled with two outs and Trey Sweeney followed with another hit. Carpenter, who had entered the game as a pinch-hitter, demolished a 2-2 pitch, depositing the ball into the right field stands to stupefy the Cleveland fans.

The home run produced the first runs of the series for the Tigers, a team that has been on fire for months. Detroit went 31-13 since Aug. 11 to qualify for the postseason and then eliminated the American League West champion Houston Astros in the wild-card series.

The cats hit another blow and return to their Comerica Park fiefdom for the next two games, tomorrow and Thursday, with the possibility of advancing.
