To help victims of harassment, the city of Bron will participate in the Ask Angela device from the start. An initiative that allows you to quickly find a safe place in the city.
Street harassment is a daily problem for many people in France. Since June 2020, the government adopted the Ask Angela device to allow the victims to take refuge in a safe place partner of the projectt. This program is inspired by Ask for Angela, an initiative launched in 2018 in the United Kingdom and taken up in other countries. To support its inhabitants, the city of Bron has decided to join the device at the start of the school year.
Shops, bars, restaurants or even hotels that are partners in the operation must display a sticker on their window showing their membership in the system. Victims of harassment can thus enter one of these shelters and ask “Where is Angela?” “. Traders will thus be able to designate a room out of sight, in safety, so that people can contact a loved one or the police, if necessary. This solution is thought out for both women and men victims of harassment who wish to find a quick refuge by creating this network of safe places.
A recurring fact and punishable by law
According to the government website Stop the Violence, 8 out of 10 women fear going out alone at night. Most also state that they have already been followed, whether on the street or on public transport. In France, since the law of August 8, 2013, street harassment is repressed by sexist outrage and can be punished with a fine between 90 to 750 euros.
