With Airbus A350: Why is Lufthansa flying Malta – New York?

In the summer, the German airline flies regularly from Malta to New York-Newark and back. However, Lufthansa flights cannot be booked.

When it gets its Airbus A321 XLR, Air Malta will also include long-haul flights in its program. In addition to India, the southern European island nation’s national airline has its sights set on New York in particular. There is a large Maltese diaspora there and also tourists willing to pay who want to travel to Malta.

But before Air Malta can start flights between the island and New York, Lufthansa is now doing it. Between June 30 and October 15, the German airline flies back and forth between Malta and Newark Liberty International Airport – up to three times a week. Airbus A350s are used on the outbound flight LH489 and return flight LH488.

Malta is the starting point for many cruises

However, Lufthansa is not targeting ordinary passengers. The flight cannot be booked either. It is a charter order, like the portal One Mile At A Time reported. The A350 is used by Viking Cruises to bring passengers from the USA to Malta and vice versa. Various company cruises start on the Mediterranean island.

Air Malta tried charter flights in the summer in the early 2000s. At that time she flew with a leased Boeing 757 from Malta via Shannon to New York. And Balkan Bulgarian Airlines once offered Sofia – Malta – New York JFK with a Boeing 767.
