With a simple sticker, they deceive two Tesla models to accelerate to 140 km / h in sections of 50

The researchers minimally altered a speed limit signal of 35 miles per hour, so that the 3 looked like an 8, with which both cars nearly tripled the maximum allowed.

Researchers at the cybersecurity company McAfee managed to trick two Tesla cars, of different models, to accelerate to 140 kilometers per hour in an area where it is not allowed to exceed 50. They did so using only a small sticker on a sign of traffic.

To fool Tesla’s Mobileye EyeQ3 camera system – which reads the signals and sends the information to the car’s automatic cruise speed system – researchers Steve Povolny and Shivangee Trivedi placed the sticker on a 35-mile speed limit sign. per hour (about 50 kilometers per hour), so that 3 looks like an 8.

Both the Tesla Model X and Model S systems, both of 2016, read the signal in the wrong way, with which both vehicles exceeded the allowed speed limit and accelerated autonomously up to 85 miles per hour (140km / h ).

“That little piece of sticker was all that was needed to make the best prediction of the MobilEye camera for the signal 85 mph,” the researchers warned in a statement.

The company notified its findings to both Testa and MobilEye, who acknowledged the investigation, but do not plan to address the problem on their platforms.
