The clock had only marked 25 seconds, when Ángel Sepúlveda surprised with a successful shot from point-blank range to score the fastest goal in the history of Cruz Azul. The goal was the precise boost for La Maquina to unleash its potential as a leader at the Olimpico Universitario stadium and beat Pumas 2-0 on matchday 14 of the Apertura 2024 tournament of the Liga Mx.
Under the guidance of Martín Anselmi, Cruz Azul has found a version with which they please the fans in every game with an intense pace of play and, above all, with goals. Now, La Maquina reached 34 points in the season, a figure that reinforces it as the leader with 37 points, nine more than its pursuer Toluca.
While the celestials celebrated their sixth consecutive victory, the felines saw their streak of six games without losing ended when they now fell in front of their fans on the Ciudad Universitaria field. In the statistics, the Auriazules stagnated in the fourth place with 24 units.
Although the cats came to the match with high spirits after the good performances they have had in recent days, that optimism was collapsed in just a matter of seconds.
In the first touches on the ball, Carlos Rotondi overflowed the left side and sent a cross that Ángel Sepúlveda pushed to reach seven goals for the season and stalk the lead as a net-breaker.
It was a historic goal for La Maquina, since until now the fastest goal the team had on record was the one scored by Rafael Baca with 28 seconds against Pachuca on March 16, 2019.
Already with the advantage on the scoreboard against Pumas, the light blue team repeated the dose just twelve minutes in to beat goalkeeper Gil Alcalá, who was now the starter after Julio González was out due to injury. This time the goal came after a ball play and a header from Ignacio Rivero.
Despite the chorus of “Goya, Goya” that the feline fans launched from the stands to encourage Gustavo Lema’s team, the duel was doomed.
