With a new strategy, Belgium wants to be less vulnerable in terms of cyber security – IT Pro – News

The Belgian National Security Council approved the ‘Cyber Security Strategy 2.0’. “This plan should make Belgium one of the least vulnerable European countries in terms of cyber security by 2025”, says Miguel De Bruycker, director of the Center for Cybersecurity Belgium.

The new strategic plan covers the period from 2021-2025 and contains six objectives with which Belgium should be better protected against large-scale cyber attacks. The first objective put forward by the strategy is to strengthen the digital environment in Belgium. This must be achieved by, among other things, making additional investments in a safer basic network infrastructure by using encryption and safer internet standards. In addition, more will be invested in research and development and in the cyber skills of intelligence and security services.

According to the plan, the knowledge and skills of citizens, users and administrators of network systems must also increase. This will be achieved through awareness and awareness campaigns on cyber security. Citizens also need to be informed more quickly about emerging and important threats or vulnerabilities.

Organizations of “vital importance” will be permanently informed of potential threats, vulnerabilities or incidents in cyberspace. Annual exercises should ensure that the current Cyber Emergency Plan from 2017 can be adjusted annually.

In addition, work will also be done on a faster identification of potential danger on the network. To achieve this, the international cyber threat will be continuously monitored, so that actors can be disrupted more quickly. The report states that all Belgian intelligence and security services will have to work closely together for this.

According to the authors of the report, the investigation, prosecution and sanctioning of cybercrime must also improve. Cyber expertise will be built up at all levels of the police forces to make this possible.

The plan shows that collaboration between the public, private and academic sectors is also considered very important. The Belgian Cyber Security Center will continue to coordinate the cooperation between these sectors in order to exchange information and experiences. Finally, Belgium will continue to focus on bilateral cooperation between its own authorities and similar institutions in other countries or at other political levels.

“With this plan, Belgium wants to be one of the least vulnerable countries in Europe in terms of cyber security by 2025”, says Miguel De Bruycker, director of the Center for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB), which will be responsible for the implementation of the cybersecurity strategy.
