America also broke a one-week death record, with 19,349 people. This represents nearly 400 deaths after the old record.

And the United States set a new record for coronavirus cases in one week, at 1,599,479. That is almost 46,000 cases from the revised record set Wednesday, or about 159 cases per minute. Daily cases reported Thursday reached 274,703, the second worst after January 2.

The holidays have closed testing sites, delayed paperwork, and changed who is tested. This past week, 49 states had more cases than a week before and 36 states had more deaths. And data from the COVID tracking project shows 43 conditions with higher test positivity.

In all, 13 states reported a record number of cases for the week and five states reported a record number of deaths.

FDA warns of accuracy of curative test widely used in California

More than 100 COVID-19 test sites across California could produce a substantial number of false negative results, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration. The FDA issued a statement this week alerting patients and healthcare providers to the risk of false results with a particular type of SARS-Cov-2 test from Curative, a medical testing start-up founded in 2020.

According to the Curative website, it has more than 100 testing sites spread across California, including large groups in the Inland Empire, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles County. Some of these sites are in partnership with local counties.

As the curative tests are self-administered, there is a risk that the swab will not be performed correctly, leading to inaccurate results, according to the FDA. A false negative test could mean that individuals do not self-isolate, leading to increased spread of the virus within the community.

Curative issued a statement this week defending its test: “Curative’s test has been validated and is offered during the pandemic under emergency use authorization, and is labeled with specific warnings, precautions, and limitations that the FDA reiterated in the safety communication. The company said.

Committee to review case of Indiana doctor who reported racism before his death

Indiana University Health has convened a group of national experts on diversity and health care to investigate a high-profile case involving alleged racist treatment at the Carmel Health System Hospital, Indiana.

Three other US states have discovered the most contagious variant of the coronavirus that was first identified in the UK. On Thursday, the strain was found in eight states and 33 countries.

Texas health officials announced Thursday that the state had found the variant known as B.1.1.7 in a man with no travel history. The man, who is between 30 and 40, is isolating himself while health officials work to identify and quarantine his loved ones.

In Pennsylvania, health officials identified the strain in a person described as a “traveler,” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “It was not a case of community spread,” said Pennsylvania Health Secretary Rachel Levine. The patient exhibited mild symptoms and is isolating himself at home, the newspaper reported.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said Thursday the state had discovered two cases of the coronavirus variant. The two, aged 15 to 25, recently traveled, one to Ireland and the other to New York State.
