With a great goal at the end, Colombia beats Peru and takes third in the Copa América – 07/09/2021

Luis Díaz scored a great goal in second-half injury and guaranteed Colombia third place in the America Cup. Today (9), at Mané Garrincha, with a score of 3-2, Reinaldo Rueda’s team beat Peru, turning it around.

In a shot from outside the area, in the angle, Díaz scored his second goal of the game. Cuadrado marked the other Colombian. Peru went to the nets with Lapadula and Yotún.

This was the fifth time that the Colombian team won third place in the Copa America in its history. Colombia still owns a title and a vice.

They did well: Goalkeeper Vargas assists, and Díaz scores two great goals

The Colombian comeback goal was very beautiful. First for the launch of goalkeeper Vargas, who from his area gave assistance to Luis Díaz. The attacker took the marker with a shoulder play and put it in the net, completing a nice move. And it wasn’t the most beautiful goal by the attacker, who in the final moments hit the angle to score the decisive goal.

Bad: Zapata disappears and is replaced

Center forward Duvan Zapata left the Copa America without scoring a single goal. In yet another performance, he was replaced in the second half.

Cueva between heaven and hell

Cristian Cueva participated in both the Peruvian and Colombian first goal. It was his assistance for Yotún to put on the net. In speed with dribbling, intelligence, ball time, a quality shot. But the excess of security hurt him soon after. In the final stage, he tried to protect a ball, lost, and the foul that followed came a draw.

Peru’s game: Team focused on the counterattack

Although he started his team in 4-3-3, coach Ricardo Gareca played on the counterattack. His team stood defensively, waiting for the ball possession that has characterized Colombia throughout the competition, and exploited a lot the quick creations. That’s exactly how Lapadula and Peña had chances before Yotún scored the opening goal of the game.

The path of counterattack continued to be a Peruvian expedient in the final stage, even more so with frequent Colombian attacks. The scenario only changed after the turn, when Gareca placed Ormeño and passed and asked his teammates to look for the crossed balls in the area.

Colombia’s game: Yield improves in the second half

Against Peru, Colombia made the same mistakes that accompanied its trajectory in the Copa America. Reinaldo Rueda’s team had a lot of ball possession, exchanged passes in the vicinity of the area but could not penetrate with quality. He lived off of crosses, rebounds and individual shots always born at the feet of Luis Díaz.

In the second half, however, Rueda’s team came back much more committed to getting the goals. He tied and started to rule the game, even though he suffered on the counterattack. Until the turn came in a beautiful move by goalkeeper Vargas with Luis Díaz.
