With a goal from Ramón Juárez, América wins against Chivas in the national classic

The national classic returned to its original venue, the Ciudad de los Deportes stadium, after 70 years, in a duel that went from freezing to jubilant with América’s 1-0 victory over Chivas.

Ramón Juárez (31) was the protagonist by scoring the goal that gave life to a game that was shaping up for lethargy. With the victory on matchday seven of the Clausura 2024 tournament, the Águilas gain ground in Liga Mx by reaching nine points, while Guadalajara has eleven units.

The final of the Copa México on May 12, 1954, played at the Ciudad de los Deportes stadium, is considered the origin of the so-called national classic. However, the venue would host that duel only on a few occasions.

Just a few months later that same year, on September 5, it would be the last time that the Noche Buena neighborhood would be the setting for a national classic, after the Águilas left the venue to move to the Olympic University Stadium and later settle in the Azteca Stadium, where they had remained since 1966.

Now, the Ciudad de los Deportes stadium was reunited with one of its historic passages. On this occasion, Chivas dominated at the start of the match with shots from Armando González and Alan Mozo, while the presence of the red-and-whites also had an impact in the stands.

Everything looked like a night of torture for the Eagles, until the unexpected reaction of Ramón Juárez (31) on a rebound allowed them to turn the script of this classic around and shake the nets.

Beyond giving the Americanists the advantage, the goal also reminded them of the significance of this duel, facing their bitter rival, in a historic setting from which they seem to feel distant even though it has marked part of their essence.

Thus, both teams were a little more daring in attack but left the promise of goals to unleash euphoria, such as a shot by Bryan Rodriguez that hit the crossbar. The fans, on the other hand, fell into controversy by launching the homophobic cry in the second half, a cry that only overshadowed the game.
