Querétaro fought a battle against its own mistakes. If it weren’t for the strength of Fabiola Santamaría, who scored a double and rescued the feathered team at the Olympic Alameda stadium, the victory over León (2-1) in the tenth round of the Liga Mx Femenil would not have been possible.
Santamaría appeared twice and with that everything was decided. The attacker, from the Azcapotzalco municipality, took advantage of rebounds that goalkeeper Natalia Acuña and her defenders left on the penalty area and did not fail (25 and 56) to break the tie that the Leonese were trying for. Yashira Barrientos had momentarily tied the score before the break (42), in one of those lapses that have done so much harm to the locals, but then she did not come back with so much danger.
“It was a very rough first half, but the team held up well and responded better,” said Santamaría at the end of the match; “we must maintain this level, not let up, because there are matches coming up that will be finals for us and we want to get into the playoffs.”
The Queretaro team reached sixth place in the standings with 17 points, 10 less than the undefeated leader Tigres, who have a perfect nine-game winning streak. For the Esmeraldas, the situation looks more complicated, as they fell to 12th place with 11 points and remain outside the final phase zone.
“The most important thing is to help the team with goals, what better way to lead us to victory than with that,” concluded Santamaría, the star of the afternoon in Querétaro.
The Liga MX Femenil will continue today with a pair of matches that could determine the title contenders. Cruz Azul will host Atlético de San Luis at La Noria while the Amazonas will star in a new edition of the Monterrey derby against Rayadas del Monterrey, who are third in the table with eight consecutive victories.
