Of course, even if the invested capital can be high (starting from 50 euros and multiples of this can be invested) the yield to maturity may not meet the saver’s expectations. This is because the rates of return on postal bonds are quite low. In truth, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti raised rates twice in the last 6 months of 2022: in July and at the end of October. In this way, to date it appears that the highest rate of return to maturity, a good 4.50%, is of Voucher dedicated to minors.

Postal savings bonds: where it is worth investing 15,000 euros to obtain a higher return

Despite the low yields, postal savings bonds are among the investment methods that many Italians choose above all for the security and guarantee of the return of 100% of the capital and the interest accrued up to maturity. Obviously, the latter will be fully reimbursed only at the natural maturity of the security. Otherwise, only those accrued up to the early repayment will be returned.

Another point in favor of postal bonds is the absence of subscription and redemption costs. In fact, the expenses will only concern withholding taxes. Without forgetting that they will not be influenced by changes in the financial markets as can happen to BOT or BPT government bonds.

A reader writes to InformazioneOggi.it: “I would like to invest 15,000 euros in medium-long term postal savings bonds. Which is the cheapest one? Thank you”.

Poste Italiane distributes a total of 10 postal savings bonds with different characteristics. Of these, however, only 3 have a medium-long maturity:

  • 12 years for the 3×4 voucher;
  • 16 years for the 4×4 Voucher;
  • 20 years for the ordinary voucher.

Each of these coupons have different characteristics and interest rates. In particular:

  • 3% is the gross annual yield at maturity of the 4×4 Bond;
  • finally, 2.50% is the gross annual yield on maturity of the Ordinary Bond.
