The counting of votes in the elections in Turkey

After processing 100% of the ballots in the presidential elections in Turkey, the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in the lead with a result of 49.35%. His main rival, the candidate of the united opposition Kemal Kulçdaroğlu, won 45%, the candidate of the right-wing Alliance ATA (Ataturkists) Sinan Ogan – 5.29%.

As a result, the second round of elections will be held on May 28.

The governing “Republican Alliance” leads the parliamentary elections with 49.3%. The opposition “People’s Alliance” received 35.19%, the left “Alliance of Labor and Freedom” – 9.2%. To enter the parliament, it is necessary to overcome the 7 percent barrier.

Presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Turkey on Sunday. At them, the citizens of the republic voted for presidential candidates and for deputies of the Grand National Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey, who are elected for a term of five years. A record voter turnout in the election was previously reported at around 88%.

Fierce counting: Turks asked them not to leave polling stations

When Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council allowed the online publication of the vote count, the first figures that appeared on television spoke of the incumbent president’s overwhelming success. However, as often happens in Turkish elections, as the votes were counted, Erdogan’s results began to decrease, while the figure for his rival, on the contrary, steadily increased.

The mayors of Istanbul and Ankara, Ekrem Imamoglu and Mansur Yavas, who are members of the opposition People’s Alliance and are running for vice-presidential positions, spoke in tandem on NTV and announced the victory of their candidate in the presidential elections.
