Mexico City. Toluca closed the fifth round of the Liga MX with its third victory of the season, defeating Atlético de San Luis 2-1 at the Nemesio Díez stadium. The Devils took advantage of a couple of mistakes by their rival to maintain their undefeated run in third place in the competition, despite the expulsion of Víctor Manuel Arteaga at the hour mark.
Jesús Gallardo (30) opened the scoring with a header that slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Andrés Sánchez, while Paulinho (60) sealed the match in favor of the home team in the second half. When the match was under the control of the scarlet team, a mistake by the Brazilian Luan Garcia Teixeira allowed Atlético to equalize before the break.
The central defender tried to play out from the penalty area, but he hit the Frenchman Sébastien Salles-Lamonge, who led the San Luis counterattack and celebrated Luis Ronaldo Nájera’s goal (37).
After several adjustments from the Brazilian Renato Paiva on the bench, Toluca regained confidence in the second half and took the lead on the scoreboard. All this thanks to a back pass from Italian defender Cristiano Piccini, whose lack of concentration left forward Joao Paulo Dias alone to make it 2-1 (60).
Under the watchful eye of Mexican national team coach Javier Aguirre and his assistant Rafael Márquez, who were present in one of the boxes, the Devils reached 11 points while Atleti remained at eight units.
