The Wisconsin Supreme Court today declined to consider the process of the Republican re-election to the U.S. presidency, Donald Trump, which was trying to reverse Democratic Joe Biden’s victory.
The legal defeat in Wisconsin was the most recent of a series of setbacks in Trump’s strategy of trying to reverse his electoral defeat in several states – which contributed to the general victory of Biden, already considered President-elect – alleging the existence of “fraud electoral ”or procedural irregularities.
Trump asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to disqualify more than 221,000 ballot papers in the state’s two largest counties, where the Democratic Party has a strong foothold, saying there were irregularities in the way votes were being counted.
The Republican candidate wanted the case to go automatically to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, claiming that there was no time to go through the smaller courts, given the approach of December 14, the date when the “big voters” of each state meet to decide the vote in Congress that determines the choice of the next President of the USA.
Donald Trump considers that there were thousands of postal votes that lacked a written request that had been filed and argued that the electronic register created when an elected official votes by mail is not in the spirit of the law.
The Republican candidate also contested other ballot papers in which election officials filled in address information that was missing from the certification envelope where the vote was placed, although this has been a common practice in Wisconsin for many years.
Finally, Trump contested the postal ballot papers in which voters declared themselves “indefinitely confined” because of the covid-19 pandemic, to justify this type of procedure, which exempted them from having to present a document with supporting photo.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court today decided not to uphold these complaints, but it still left two cases pending, for similar complaints filed by the Republican Party.
This week, the state of Wisconsin certified Biden’s victory, setting the stage for “big voters” to make the decision in favor of the Democratic candidate on the 14th.
