From Tuesday 17 November, Austria introduces a nationwide lockdown. Although from mid-October, incl. restaurants or hotels (apart from business trips), the number of patients continues to grow alarmingly, and the winter season – so important for tourism – is fast approaching.

From November 17, all non-essential stores will be closed. Outlets with the most necessary articles, pharmacies, banks and post offices will be open, according to the AFP agency. The current curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. will be extended in the sense that you will have to stay home all day, with exceptions such as going to work, the doctor, the store for basic necessities or exercise.

Lockdown from Tuesday – what is it for?

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, announcing a government decree on Saturday, added that it is about limiting interpersonal contacts as much as possible – people should work from home whenever possible. Learning at schools will be done remotely – so far it was the case in high schools and universities. The new restrictions are valid until December 6.

Winter in Austria – crucial for tourism

Winter is the most important season for tourism in Austria. Austrians living off it during the winter months earn the most – the entire infrastructure is geared towards skiers and snowboarders. The government will certainly do everything to keep the winter season at least partially normal. May lockdown help in this.
