Rising electricity prices are the aftermath of, among others increasingly expensive carbon dioxide emission rights. But none other than the Polish budget is making money on them. The higher the price, the more money the government has.
From the beginning of 2021, the prices of carbon dioxide emission allowances have increased by several dozen percent. In June, they cost over EUR 50 per ton. At the beginning of September, the price of allowances sold by Poland exceeded EUR 61. Interestingly, Poland has not created its own exchange of CO2 allowances and sells them in Berlin.
How much is the government earning on CO2?
Each EU country has a carbon dioxide emission limit. It can sell them – and that’s what Poland does. And on the one hand, it loses attachment to coal on the other he earns.
The mere production of energy from coal puts us in a bad situation. The rising prices of this raw material are one thing. The second issue is the fact that – as we read on the Euractiv.pl portal – wholesale electricity prices in Poland are determined in accordance with the principle merit order .
