Wirecard: fanboys in the banks – DER SPIEGEL

Hardly anything welds together like suffering shared. Also in the Wirecard case: First, Germany’s banks and the financial supervisory authority stood in line during the rise of the supposed miracle corporation, now, since its collapse in June 2020, the stirrup holders have been complaining in unison that they have become victims of perfidious fraudsters – a simple and convenient explanation of the disaster.

Perhaps they should have just taken a closer look in good time, but above all had the courage to swim against the current. That was possible, as shown by confidential documents from the parliamentary committee of inquiry of the Bundestag on the Wirecard affair, which SPIEGEL was able to evaluate. Accordingly, Wirecard appeared dubious to the experts at Bayerische Landesbank (BayernLB) in the spring of 2018, a good two years before the collapse. At the time, the state-owned Landesbank, like many other institutes, was still the group’s lender, which was well on its way to the German share index (Dax). A customer that no financial institution would frighten away frivolously.
