The first marathon on natural ice will be finished on Tuesday evening in Winterswijk. It is a first for the Gelderland town that it can organize the first natural ice marathon.
On the spray-painted skating rink of the Winterswijkse IJsvereniging, the ice thickness is sufficient for a competition for men and women. This year, Winterswijk competed with Haaksbergen to organize the first marathon.
The ice had to be at least 3 centimeters thick during the inspection. The ice in both Winterswijk and Haaksbergen met this requirement, but the KNSB expected the ice floor in the former location to be slightly better on Tuesday evening.
The skating association reported on Monday that there were seven locations that had a chance of organizing the first skating competition on natural ice. Haaksbergen and Winterswijk were already seen as the biggest contenders given the weather forecasts.
The women’s match starts at 7 p.m. The men are on the ice at 8:30 PM.
The Frisian Burgum had the scoop last winter (December 14, 2022). Gary Hekman and Maaike Verweij were then crowned winners of the marathon. The winter before, Noordlaren (December 26, 2021) was the lucky one. Haaksbergen last held the first marathon on natural ice in January 2019.
