The trial is initially scheduled to last 90 days until autumn 2025 (case no. 16 KLs 411 Js 23888/16 (75/19). Winterkorn denies the allegations. At the start of the trial, his defence lawyer Dr. Felix Dörr pointed out that criminal law requires proof of personal guilt on the part of every defendant. After the diesel scandal allegations became known in September 2015, Winterkorn assumed political responsibility for the events by resigning – but always denied any criminal responsibility.
