RALEIGH, North Carolina.- Weather conditions will worsen from early Thursday after a winter storm hit.

Much of the Midwest will have rain and portions to the north, including the city of Raleigh, could see up to .25 inches of ice.

Remember that freezing rain is dangerous on roads because of the possible formation of black ice.

Which counties are under winter storm watches?
- A winter storm advisory will be in effect through Friday at 7 am in the counties: Alamance, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Vance and Warren. A half inch of ice is possible in these regions.
- A winter storm warning will be in effect through Friday at 7 am in the counties: Chatham, Franklin, Halifax, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, Stanly and Wake. Up to 0.25 inches of ice could be recorded.

When will the bad weather start?
The rains would begin early Wednesday morning and as temperatures drop there will be a transition to freezing rain around 7:30 am on Thursday. Bad weather will last until Friday.

“It will be difficult to travel on Highway 85 and 40 if the ice forms,” shared Univision meteorologist Anthony Ortiz.

The accumulated ice They would be: 0.04 in Sanford, 0.11 in Raleigh, 0.5 in Chapel Hill, 0.55 in Greensboro, and 0.63 in Roxboro.

Duke Energy mobilizes crews to the Carolinas
Electric power company Duke Energy announced that 175 crews were dispatched to the Carolinas to attend to possible power outages during the winter storm.

“Help is on the way! Crews from #Florida left Clearwater at 6am and headed to @CLTgov and @CLTMotorSpdwy. An additional 100 crews departed Monday,” Ana Gibbs of Duke Energy Communications shared on Twitter.

Prepare for the winter storm
The North Carolina Center for Emergency Operations (NCEM) reported that “the threat of significant ice accumulations continues to increase in much of the west and center.”

The agency asks state residents to prepare for the ice storm and follow these tips:

- Make sure your emergency kit is ready.
- Charge your devices.
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas where there are icy roads and downed trees or power lines.
- Cut off damaged branches around your house.
- Don’t leave the windshield up.
- Have food and medicine for a week.
- Do not park your vehicle under trees.
