Winter Storm Watch in effect for Chicagoland through Friday evening

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning that is in effect through Friday night for parts of east central and northeast Illinois.

Officials have warned that blizzard conditions could make travel unsafe, with winds gusting up to 55 mph. Falling snow and winds can create conditions with little or no visibility, authorities said.

Roads would be covered in ice as temperatures drop rapidly on Thursday afternoon.

With wind chills, temperatures are expected to drop to -25ºF to -30ºF Thursday night through Friday. Freezing to exposed skin can occur in these conditions within 20 minutes, authorities have warned.

Power outages can occur due to the force of the wind, officials warn, urging the public to prepare for dangerous conditions.

In a briefing last week, city officials asked residents to keep an eye out for the elderly and homeless who are outdoors.

Officials also reminded that the city’s heating centers are available to residents. Chicagoans can call 311 if they see people dealing with inclement weather or seeking help for those in need.

Snow is expected to start Thursday and road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly Thursday afternoon. Snow is expected to be heavy through Friday when dangerous cold winds are expected to set in. The snow is expected to abate on Saturday, but snow and wind chills could still be a factor.
