Winter Health Advisory: Get Vaccinated for Influenza and COVID-19 to Protect Vulnerable Groups

Within the framework of the beginning of the winter season, the Ministry of Health of Mexico City (SEDESA) recommends that the capital’s population increase preventive measures to avoid respiratory diseases; If you are a vulnerable population, go to any Health Center to get the Influenza and COVID-19 vaccine.

Frequent hand washing, proper sneezing (covering nose and mouth with forearm), not spitting, not touching your face with dirty hands, as well as constant cleaning and disinfection of commonly used surfaces and objects are recommended.

Also, wear appropriate clothing such as a hat, gloves, scarf and socks; avoid sudden changes in temperature and drafts; and consume foods and supplements with a high content of vitamin C and D (fruits and vegetables), and drink plenty of water.

Likewise, SEDESA calls for avoiding sudden changes in temperature and covering up, especially when leaving the vehicle or home.

The use of face masks is recommended in poorly ventilated and crowded places, such as public transportation, as well as for people with symptoms of a respiratory disease.

The director of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine of the Public Health Services, Dr. José Jesús Trujillo Gutiérrez, called on people with symptoms of respiratory disease not to self-medicate, since around 85 percent of these illnesses are caused by a virus, which are not treated with antibiotics.

“A doctor must make the decision if the acute condition that occurs corresponds to a bacterial or viral infection, and the specialist will prescribe the corresponding medications,” said Dr. Trujillo Gutiérrez.

Regarding influenza vaccination, the doctor stated that it should be applied to girls and boys from 6 months to 5 years of age, pregnant women, adults over 60 years of age and the population between 5 and 69 years of age with comorbidities, who They can go to receive their dose at any of the 233 Health Centers that are located in the 16 Mayor’s Offices of Mexico City.

Regarding the vaccine against COVID-19, it is recommended for people 60 years of age or older, the population between 18 and 59 years of age with comorbidities, and pregnant women who have been at least 6 months since their last application. Vaccination schedules are also initiated for children under 5 years of age.

Finally, this agency reiterates that, if you present symptoms related to respiratory diseases such as sneezing, congestion or runny nose, sore throat or body, chills, fever, loss of smell or diarrhea, it is recommended to go to the Health Center. close to your home.
