First winners of the IBC awards published: The German DVB-I pilot is the winner of the special prize for innovation 2023. The IBC2023 International Honor for Excellence Award goes to the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

This year, the IBC Awards will once again be presented at an event during the exhibition in Amsterdam. Some of the award winners — the winners of the Excellence and Special Awards — have been announced in advance and are named and explained in the text below.
On behalf of the IBC, several juries view and award prizes for the submissions in various categories for the annual IBC Awards.
The Innovation Awards will also be presented at the event. They were judged and selected by a jury consisting of Vijaya Cherian, Carolyn Giardina, Heather McLean, Michael Short and Christine Gebhard, co-founder and managing editor of film-tv-video.de.
International Honour for Excellence Award
The IBC2023 International Honor for Excellence (IHFE) Award, the IBC’s most prestigious award, goes to the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group commemorating the 100th anniversary of its founding by Albert, Sam and Jack Warner. The IHFE is one of a series of IBC special awards that recognize the very best in innovation and change in the media and entertainment industry. The award will be presented during the IBC Innovation Awards Ceremony on Sunday 17 September at 18:00 CEST in the IBC Premier Lounge.
The Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group honored by the IHFE embodies the judges’ ability to continually adapt to changes in the media and entertainment marketplace. The company began as a pioneer in cinema and has since grown into a leader in all aspects of the entertainment industry – from feature film, television and direct-to-consumer production to animation, comics, video games, consumer products, themed entertainment, studio tours and trademark licenses. Warner Bros.’ vast library, one of the most renowned and valuable in the world, contains more than 145,000 hours of programming. The studio is also home to one of the most diverse portfolios of popular franchises in the world, including Looney Tunes, Wizarding World, DC, Friends, Game of Thrones, Hanna-Barbera and many more.

Special Award for Innovation

The German DVB-I Pilot is the winner of the Special Prize for Innovation 2023. This is an initiative that brings together various stakeholders from the German media industry, including broadcasters, device manufacturers, software providers and research institutes. The project aims to further develop the DVB-I standard to enable the continuous use of linear television programmes.
The organizations involved included: ARD (working group of public broadcasters in the Federal Republic of Germany), Bayerische Medien Technik GmbH, Dolby Laboratories, DVB Project, European Broadcasting Union, Fraunhofer FOKUS, LG, Media Broadcast, MIT-xperts, ProSiebenSat.1 Media , OnScreen Publishing, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB), RTL Germany, SES, Sofia Digital, Sony Corporation, Tara Systems, TP Vision, Vestel, WDR (West German Broadcasting) and ZDF (Second German Television).
Best Technical Paper
Experts from the IBC Technical Papers Committee and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) selected the paper for another award that will be presented as part of the innovation awards ceremony.
Mark Waddell, Ian Wagdin, David Butler (BBC), Sam Yoffe, Kenny Barlee, Douglas Allan, Malcolm Brew and Robert Stewart (University of Strathclyde and Neutral Wireless) receive the Best Technical Paper award for their work on setting up a standalone , non-public 5G network at the coronation of King Charles III. The committee and the IET felt the contribution was exceptionally well written and of great relevance to the media industry, providing valuable technical insights. This year’s other specialist contributions will also be presented at the conference.

Social Impact Awards
As part of its Social Impact Awards program, IBC has launched a new special award: the 2023 Changemaker Award. The award winner is Eurovision Song Contest for its contribution to society and culture – an award for a brand that remains relevant on a large scale. The IBC will welcome Martin Österdahl, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Executive Supervisor for the Eurovision Song Contest, on stage at the Changemakers program to accept the award and speak about the live broadcast event. The Eurovision Song Contest 2023, organized by the BBC and EBU on behalf of Ukraine’s UA:PBC, was followed across five continents. 162 million viewers watched the competition during the three live shows.
Special Award for Social Impact
Women in Streaming Media Mentorship Programme, an organization that has grown from 50 to 1,200 members over the past five years and has established a significant presence in the industry, receives the IBC Social Impact Award. Her free, six-month mentoring program has helped fill six board seats and eleven C-suite positions, along with forty-five promotions and appointments.
