The VRT TV series “1984” was awarded 10 Ensors: Best Sound, Best Music, Best Screenplay (Willem Wallyn), Best Art Director (Stijn Verhoeven), Best Costume (Sophie Van den Keybus), Best Direction (Wouter Bouvijn ), best editing, best leading role in a TV series (Aimé Claeys), best supporting role in a TV series (Tom Vermeir), best series in fiction.
Seven Ensors went to the film “Wil”, which tells the story of two police friends during the German occupation in World War II, with the theme of collaboration with the Nazis being the central theme. Best film, best film screenplay (Carl Joos), box office prize because the film was so successful at the box office, best cinematography (Robrecht Heyvaert), best directing film (Tim Mielants), best leading role film (Stef Aerts) and best supporting role film (Jan Bijvoet).
The musician, poet, designer and filmmaker Balojij received 2 Ensors: for the best French-language film “Augure” about superstition in his Congolese homeland and for the best young film artist.
This year the Ensors have come under criticism again. For some time now, the film and TV awards have been gender-neutral when it comes to acting (leading and supporting roles), but this year too, no actress received an Ensor. This is now leading to heated discussions in Flanders about the meaning of gender neutrality in media award ceremonies.
