Windows on your new ARM Mac? Forget it

Apple’s transition from Intel to ARM with Mac also has its drawbacks, for example regarding Windows.

If you buy a new Mac, it will of course come with MacOS. However, you can easily install Windows on your MacBook or iMac via the Boot Camp program. This operating system will be installed as an extra, in addition to MacOS. The advantage of this is that you can run programs via Windows that are not available on Mac. Think for example of games.

Boot Camp runs a full version of Windows. Microsoft’s operating system is compatible with AMD and Intel processors, but not with the new ARM processors from Apple. Apple CEO Craig Federighi reports in the Daring Fireball podcast that indeed no OS can run besides macOS on an ARM Mac.

There is a detour, but you cannot really call this an alternative. Within MacOS you can still run Windows applications with a virtual environment. However, this goes with the necessary lag and does not even come close to a full Windows experience.

For the people who like to use both Windows and Mac on an Apple computer, this is bad news. Unfortunately, with the shift to ARM, we are saying goodbye to Boot Camp, which is a disadvantage.
