According to the official blog of Windows, insider users will soon be able to get acquainted with the latest version of the Paint program. The functions of the graphics editing program have been significantly expanded: it now handles transparent pixels and users can use separate image layers during editing.
Suitable for producing minimalistic pixelated doodles, Paint is a basic experience for users of household computing technology. As Paintbrush, it was part of the default Windows operating system suite from November 1985 and handled BMP and PCX files. From Windows 95, it was given the shorter name Paint, and it was also suitable for editing JPEG and GIF files, which were widespread by that time.
Its editing functions were and remain minimalist, the program thus became one of the basic elements of Internet culture, as a digital folk art tool related to pixel art, it lends an immediately recognizable visual style, it was used to create webcomics and meme series, as well as works that cross over into contemporary fine art.
Since the fall of the animated digital assistant called Clippy, it may have become a tradition at Microsoft that they don’t know what to think of such cultural phenomena, which is why they tried to get rid of Paint several times over the years. It was last announced in 2017 that Windows 10 would be replaced by a program called Paint 3D. Following the general uproar, they hurriedly announced that Paint would be available for free in the Microsoft Store application store, but in the end they preferred to leave it in the operating system.
In Windows 11, the dice have already turned, with a dark user interface with an improved font manager. The new announcement goes even further, the cute minimalist program now enters the world of Adobe’s professional image editors by managing layers. And being able to save transparent PNGs some 28 years after the format was released is an unexpected technical revolution.
