The Microsoft Windows operating system has been updated through multiple versions and continues to evolve. It continues to introduce new features while also canceling many old features. According to foreign media The Verge, there is a feature in Windows that has not been updated for 30 years. That’s Windows formatting.

Since Windows NT, Microsoft has not updated the Windows formatting dialog box. This dialog box interface has been used to this day and still exists in Windows 11, becoming one of the “oldest” elements.

Former Microsoft developer Dave Plummer posted on X (original Twitter) to share an interesting past event. He said that on a rainy day in late 1994, he and other developers were busy porting a huge code from the Windows 95 user interface to Windows NT in the Microsoft office, and formatting was one of the differences between the two, so they The UI must be customized. He took out a piece of paper and listed in detail all the options that can be done by formatting the disk, such as file system, compression, encryption, etc., and then established a basic interface. Unexpectedly, after this temporary design was added to Windows NT, it has not been beautified or updated, and it is still in use today.

In addition, he also mentioned that his decision to limit the format size of FAT in Windows to 32GB was actually a random decision, but it turned out to be a permanent side effect.
