At the end of May, Microsoft introduced its backup solution. Windows Backup doesn’t have many features, but when you need to reinstall Windows or buy a new computer, it does make life easier. The tool originally appeared on the Dev channel in July, now also targeting older Windows 10.
Backup focuses on four areas and everything revolves around OneDrive:
Folders. Documents, photos and other files. Such a backup has been offered directly by the OneDrive client for a long time.
Application. Taskbar and Start menu shortcuts are backed up. Recently, this applies not only to applications from the Store, but also to classic programs. However, you still have to install them manually.
System settings. The state of some Windows preferences will be saved, so you won’t have to set everything up from scratch.
Authentication data. This includes passwords not only for Wi-Fi.
You can restore from recently not only when you initially set up your computer during the installation of the operating system, but also when the wizard appears again. You cannot request it at any time.
Windows 10 build 19045.3391, or the update KB5029331, released on August 10, to the Release Preview channel, unexpectedly brings the backup tool to Windows 10. Microsoft did not initially write about the addition in the announcement of the new build, but the implementation was nevertheless noticed by some, e.g. Martin Brinkmann a @PhantomOfEarth.
Windows Backup was introduced in the Windows 11 Insider Preview in May
Redmond finally the presence of Windows Backup in Windows 10 build 19045.3391 they confirmed on Monday. The content of this update will appear soon outside of the Insider testing program and will be mandatory for all computers with Tens in September. As @PhantomOfEarth points out, Microsoft only implements a backup tool, not a data recovery option.
Either this happens later or the tool is tasked with transferring the settings to a new Windows 11 PC. We have to wait for the answer. The life cycle of Windows 10 will end in two years and a few months. Paradoxically, Windows Backup will reach the Tens stable branch earlier than the Elevens stable branch.
