Windows 95 celebrates 25 years of existence – ICT actualité

This August 24, it is a quarter of a century that Microsoft launched Windows 95. The arrival of the operating system has taught us to know the start button and the dance steps of Bill Gates.

Windows 95 succeeded Windows 3.1, released in 1992, and was visually a whole different system from its predecessor. We were the first to get to know the start button to open a menu of applications and settings, while the taskbar, the recycle bin and Windows Explorer (now the Explorer) also made their entry.

On a more technical level, Windows 95 allowed longer file names and offered 32-bit support by default. The system was also trying to identify hardware more automatically, although it was still in its infancy.

The system, which was delivered mostly on CD-Rom, could run on a 386 processor with 4 megabytes of RAM and required some 50-55 megabytes of storage space, the equivalent of a robust smartphone app today. .

These innovations were accompanied by a whole campaign. This is how Microsoft called on the actors of Friends Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry in a video guide explaining the main improvements of Windows 95, including how to send a fax.

The operating system became particularly popular, in part thanks to the breakthrough of the PC era in businesses and consumers alike. In 1998, Windows 98 took over. The latter remained largely similar to Windows 95 visually, while being a greatly improved version. Thus Windows 98 was much more focused on Internet access. General OS support ended on December 31, 2000.

But perhaps one of the most memorable moments of Windows 95 was its actual launch. We still remember in particular Bill Gates (founder and CEO at the time) and Steve Ballmer (number two, before succeeding Gates) rejoicing in a particularly enthusiastic way, although a little awkward, and dancing to sounds of ‘Start me up’ by the Rolling Stones, in reference to the Windows 95 start button.
