Microsoft is adding native support for RAR, 7-Zip and GZ archives in the upcoming version of Windows 11, expected this week. Information about upcoming news described on the company’s website Panos Panayproduct director at Microsoft. We’ve added native support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-Zip, RAR, gz, and many more, using the libarchive open-source project.

Microsoft integrated support for ZIP archives into Windows in 1998. However, third-party applications must be installed to work with 7-Zip (.7z), RAR (.rar) or gz (.gz) archives. The current expansion of support for compression formats uses to uses open source project libarchiveit is likely that in the future users will see support for other common archive formats, such as tar or bzip2.
