Windows 11 Start Menu and Login Screen Changes: What to Expect According to Windows Development Team

In September from Microsoft Panos Panay left, so Windows fell into the hands of new management. He considers how to adjust the development and release trajectory. It can be expected that the change will also be reflected in the user experience. In addition to the previously mentioned emphasis on AI, we will almost certainly see changes to the Start menu.

It may seem obvious and inevitable. But we are not theorizing now, because in a debate on X, the head of the Windows & Web Experiences team was clear. Mikhail Parakhin the last day of December announced the pollwhere he asks which of the frameworks the operating system development team should invest in the most in 2024.

This is not very interesting for us and the survey is not binding. However, several comments about Windows 11 were collected under the post, to which Parakhin responded. One of them criticizes the Start menu in that an overview of all installed programs is available under a separate button, which requires another tap.

You can customize the Start in Jedenátky offer only minimally

Parakhin claims that it also annoys him. In response, he paraphrases a famous slogan from Trump’s presidential campaign when he writes that the Start menu needs to be made great again – “we need to make Start menu great again”. Start is one of the most controversial new features of Windows 11. I have consistently criticized it since its first release, and it received an embarrassed reception not only from me.

Briefly, I’ll remind you that Eleven got rid of active tiles just to create a competing Start for widgets. System customization is increasing in some places, the current Start menu is desperately static in contrast, although it has improved a bit – you can choose from three layouts and you can create folders within it.

After all the previous forms of Start, it is not clear why the Start menu in Windows 11 looks the way it does. It feels more like innovation for innovation’s sake. That is, to change something, to justify that this operating system has a different name. Starting in Tens provides noticeably more flexibility.

Next criticism is aimed at the login screen. The current time and date are displayed on the lock screen. If you accidentally skip this screen, they will hide. Furthermore, you only see information about the user account and usually a field for entering a password or PIN.

Parakhin would like to fix this as well, because it also annoys him. We’ll see if he fulfills his promises. It is difficult to say whether he will manage to modify Windows 11 23H2 in the coming months, or whether the changes will not be made until the next major version in the fall. At least we can take from the communication that the management interested in community opinion. This did not happen much during the development of Windows 11 before.

One more note about personals, which can be confusing. Yusuf Mehdi now leads, among other things, Windows, but in a business sense. Parakhin is in charge of system development, he is dedicated to user experience. At the same time, they are referred to as Windows bosses for short.
