Windows 11 runs on both the Raspberry Pi 4 and the six-year-old Lumia phone

Stricter hardware requirements for Windows 11 are an unpleasant surprise to owners of assemblies with some processors that are marked as incompatible. In the meantime, however, the new operating system is getting an unofficial way to a device where we would not expect it. Even on the Lumia 950 XL smartphone, which was introduced in 2015. Although it was a modern machine with high-end parameters, nowadays the hardware including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM will not make a hole in the world.-

Nevertheless, this model became an idol for a number of do-it-yourselfers, who managed to replace the original Windows 10 Mobile with various Linux distributions and especially the Windows 10 desktop system, thanks to the version designed for ARM processors. A demonstration of the game followed Fallout or useful programs like AutoCAD a Photoshop. When the first one was released this week preview Windows 11, it was only a matter of time before he got to the Lumia 950 XL. And it only took a few days for developer Gustav Monce to boast a successful port.-

Of course, the controls on the 5.7-inch display are not twice as convenient, but they work. Like the Start menu, a variety of applications or animations. The developer even manually installed all the necessary drivers from Windows 10 Mobile, so he was able to get the mobile network up and running. The Lumia 950 XL with Windows 11 can also make phone calls and send SMS messages. Of course, the system does not work very smoothly on the old hardware, but maybe the developers will be able to fine-tune the port in the future. Windows 11 includes a number of enhancements for touch screens, but they are not designed for smartphones. Microsoft allows the use of the OS on tablets, notebooks and converters with a minimum 9-inch screen.

While Windows 11 on the Lumia 950 XL is more of a rarity, in the case of the open source project Windows on Raspberry, we can already speak of a slightly more practical use. The latest venture is Windows 11 for the Raspberry Pi 4. Recall that only a functionally significantly limited edition of Windows 10 IoT Core was originally intended for these single-board computers. Later, however, those interested could also choose Windows 10 for ARM, which has now added Windows 11 for ARM. And at first glance, they should run smoother on a miniature computer than previous versions.

You will need a Raspberry Pi 4 with at least 4GB of RAM and a Windows 11 ARM64 image to try it out. Instructions and other information can be found, for example, on the official website of the projector Windows on Raspberry.-
