Windows 11 requires computer to have TPM 2.0 chip to be installed; understand | Technology

A Microsoft presented last Thursday (24) the Windows 11, the new version of your computer operating system.

Although it has not revealed a specific date for the release, the company has already given details about the minimum requirements that PCs will need to meet to run the new product.

Among the requirements is a security chip called TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module).

This component is a data security processor, related to cryptography. Encryption is a mechanism that scrambles information and only allows access to it with certain keys.

The TPM stores these encryption keys and can detect software changes. If that happens, it generates signals that the computer can use to contain possible damage.

According to Microsoft, the TPM chip records system startup information and checks software integrity, for example. In practice, it can prevent malicious programs from circumventing security functions.

The TPM can be a component on the motherboard, integrated with another part of the computer, or present in firmware (a set of instructions programmed directly into the hardware). The 2.0 standard was released in 2014.

O G1 asked Microsoft why this requirement was only made now, for Windows 11, and didn’t get a response until the last update of this report.

How do I know if my PC has the TPM 2.0 chip?

A Microsoft support page indicates that since 2016 the company requires that new models, lines or series must “implement and enable TPM 2.0 by default”.

Here’s how to tell if your PC has TPM 2.0 active:

  1. Go to the start menu and type tpm;
  2. Select the Security Processor option;
  3. Look for the Specification Version field and see if “2.0” is indicated.

If the information does not appear, it could mean that the computer does not have TPM 2.0 or does not have the feature enabled.

In some cases, the component needs to be activated in UEFI, software interface between operating system and firmware – the term UEFI has replaced BIOS. Strictly speaking, Windows 11 does not support BIOS, only UEFI.

It is not possible to indicate a single path to check whether TPM can be enabled via UEFI/BIOS, as each PC manufacturer uses different versions of this function.

One way out is find the exact model of the motherboard, look for the complete manual on the internet and check if there is any mention of TPM 2.0 – the document will usually only indicate that the motherboard has the compatible port, but it indicates the possibility that the component is on the PC.

How do I know if my PC is compatible with Windows 11

Microsoft has released software that indicates the compatibility of the new system, referring to all minimum requirements.

  1. Download the PC Health Check program from the Microsoft website;
  2. Open the tool and click Check Now;
  3. Next, the app will show you if your PC is compatible.

It is possible that the program accuses incompatibility because of the TPM 2.0 chip, so it’s worth checking the options mentioned above.
