Microsoft will release Windows 11 today (5/10). Laptops and personal computer (PC) with operating system or operating system (OS) Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11 for free.
“Users with compatible hardware will be able to download the Windows 11 update.” Hindustan Times, Monday (4/10).
However, the upgrade is gradual. User can switch after getting notification for upgrade to Windows 11. Not all devices can immediately update the OS today.
In addition, there are several conditions to be able to switch to Windows 1, namely:
- Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip (SoC)
- Chips: 8th generation Intel, Ryzen 2000 and newer
- RAM: 4 gigabytes (GB) or greater
- Storage: 64 GB or greater. The amount of storage required may change later. Therefore, users need to regularly update the information.
- Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later, with driver WDDM 2.0
- System Firmware: UEFI, supports Secure Boot
- TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) versi 2.0
- Display: high definition (720p), 9″ or larger monitor, 8 bits per color channel
- OS: Windows 10 version 20H1 or later for best upgrade
The specifications above can be found by downloading the PC Health Check application. The method is:
- Open the application on your laptop and computer
- A notification window will appear asking for installation approval
- Select the square-shaped icon, then ‘install’. So, it will appear pop-up notification
- Then again click the square icon and select ‘finish’
- After the application is installed, the application window will appear
- Users can select ‘check now’ to check device compatibility.
But Microsoft says that users can download Windows 11 on any hardware using the ISO method. “As long as the PC has a 64-bit 1GHz processor with two or more cores, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a TPM 1.2 chip,” the company said.
If the laptop or PC is not fully compatible with Windows 11, Microsoft will still support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025. However, it is unclear how many updates the company will release for Windows 10 over the next four years.
The 21H2 update will be available for Windows 10 users later this year. That includes GPU compute support in the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), Windows Hello enhancements, and WPA3 H2E Wi-Fi security support.
