Windows 11 24H2 was released recently and it has a lot of news. One of these means that all the small and large updates that Microsoft regularly releases will be installed both faster and with less load on the computer. Microsoft’s Steve DiAcetis documents the changes in a new blog posts.
In 24H2, Windows Update goes through component lists (called obviousfiles) simultaneously instead of sequentially, and the result is stored in a cache so that components referenced by different folders do not result in redundant reads. This speeds up the installation of common monthly updates by more than 40 percent according to Microsoft tests. The time to restart during the installation has also exceeded 30 percent faster.
The amount of working memory used by Windows Update now automatically adjusts according to the available memory, so that the process does not slow down the rest of the computer, and optimizations meaning that the processor is loaded 15-25 percent less than before.
Microsoft has also made changes that ensure that feature updates are on average 200MB smaller, including by downloading only the parts that are needed – no programs that the user has already updated through the Microsoft Store, for example, are downloaded again.
