Windows 10 October update: support for version 1809 ends in May

Microsoft has the support document for Windows 10 version 1809 added that the date for the official support end is now. There will be no longer any security updates for a long time: Regular support will expire in May.

The normal support period ends as planned in three months: The individual Windows 10 versions, unlike the older operating systems such as Windows 7, only receive regular support from Microsoft for 18 months. This means that users can rely on its security for a year and a half after the release of a new version, as Microsoft regularly patches known vulnerabilities. Microsoft now had the end of the security updates in one in the February Patch Day update notes Support document noted,

The regular security updates and error corrections, which are published on the fixed dates (patch day), will be discontinued for the Windows 10 version 1809 aka Windows 10 October update in May. The last currently planned update will be delivered on Patchday May 12th.

After this one and a half years, Windows 10 will end. There are exceptions only in the Long Term Servicing Channel for enterprise editions that receive extended support.

Successors are ready

In the meantime, the software giant has already released two further feature updates with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) and the Windows 10 November Update (version 1909). The first feature update for 2020 is expected shortly. Statistically speaking, around a fifth of all Windows 10 users are currently using version 1809. Over 50 percent are on the move with 1903, only about 15 percent with the latest version 1909. So users should slowly solve themselves, or at least consider switching if you want to continue to be on the go with an OS backed up by regular updates

The support document now states:

Memory:

Windows 10 version 1809 will reach the end of support on May 12, 2020. This applies to the following editions of Windows 10 that were released in November 2018:

  • Windows 10 Home, version 1809
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 1809
  • Windows 10 Pro for Education, version 1809
  • Windows 10 Pro for workstations, version 1809
  • Windows 10 IoT core, version 1809

These issues will no longer receive security updates after May 12, 2020. Customers who contact Microsoft support after this date are advised to update their device to the latest version of Windows 10 to continue receiving support.
