Windows 10 has a recovery tool for deleted, lost or corrupted files

Microsoft has discreetly launched new software for Windows 10: Windows File Recovery. This utility allows you to recover some lost or unintentionally deleted files.

Backing up files on Windows is a complex subject. Microsoft has changed solutions several times over the years, and now offers in Windows 10 a backup function with history of changes thanks to an external storage space (hard drive, NAS, etc.). Of course, the firm also recommends its online document backup solution with OneDrive. These functions are very practical, but cannot completely avoid the case of a file accidentally deleted on a space not configured to be saved.

This is where Windows File Recovery comes in, a new tool discreetly released by Microsoft for Windows 10.

A command line tool for the moment

L’application Windows File Recovery is available on the Microsoft Store Windows 10 and requests build 19041 of the operating system to work, in other words the May update for Windows 10. Although it is an application, you should know that it is actually a command line utility. No GUI here, you will have to refer to the documentation posted online by Microsoft to use the tool.

The documentation explains how to recover files or an entire folder in a few command lines. To work, Microsoft recommends using the Windows-specific NTFS file system, but the utility is also compatible with FAT, exFAT and ReFS. The utility also offers several recovery modes for NTFS, depending on your situation: for a file deleted recently, for a file deleted a long time ago, for formatted storage or for a corrupted disk. In the case of other file systems, it will be sufficient to recover a few types of files: PDF, ZIP, JPEG, PNG, PDF, MP3 or MPEG and ASF (MWV, WMA). Microsoft indicates in particular that it can recover lost photos and videos from the SD card of a camera.

The promise of this new tool is great on paper, and we hope that Microsoft will eventually offer a graphical interface for this utility which could become very practical.
