Microsoft started the distribution of a minor upgrade for HP business PCs which solves a configuration problem in the instrument HP Battery Health Manager of the BIOS. The problem, present in the laptop lines HP ProBook ed EliteBook, fixed thanks to the collaboration between Microsoft and HP with a recognizable patch package with the code KB4583263.
The Battery Health Manager technology in HP’s “pro” laptop BIOS is used to manage battery charging patterns for avoid overcharging which could cause malfunctions, even serious ones, of the battery or a progressive and general degradation over time. Previously, however, the setting had to be turned on manually by users.
A Windows 10 update to prevent swelling on HP notebook batteries
The update modifies the default setting, enabling the Battery Health Manager function by default. Additionally, HP points out that the tool has been updated with the introduction of “new improved charging algorithms”, while the update is being distributed on all versions of Windows 10, starting from 1809 (October 2018 Update) and later.
A list of all devices that will receive the update in these hours has been posted on the HP support site (you can find it here), and includes many models including notebooks ProBook 400 and 600 series, EliteBook 700, 800 and 1000 series, some models ZBook and other devices as well, including some thin clients. However, all users can check for the update KB4583263on the Windows Update screen, and installation is highly recommended.
Although the update changes a BIOS setting, the BIOS will not be updated or changed programmatically. Furthermore, the update does not require an operating system restart.
