8:06 p.m. | The situation in Windehausen continues to normalize
In the Heringer district of Windehausen in the Nordhausen district, the situation continued to normalize before the turn of the year. The mayor of Heringen, Matthias Marquardt, said on Friday that the groundwater was continuing to decline. The cleanup work and damage assessment are underway, but not all of the cellars are dry again. A bus shuttle service was also set up for residents on Friday to relieve the burden on the area from private vehicles during the clean-up work.
According to the mayor, normality should return on Saturday. Marquardt said he does not expect any new problems in Windehausen due to new heavy rainfall forecast in the southern Harz.
7:27 p.m. | Ramelow: New strategies for flood protection
Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow is calling for new solutions to be better prepared against floods in the future. “The classic floods always resulted from flowing water. The old wisdom that you have to build high dikes to counteract this doesn’t help us now,” said Ramelow to the editorial network Germany (RND). Dikes alone would not provide sufficient protection. “Instead, we need areas where water can stand for a longer period of time,” explained Ramelow.
In his view, the current floods in Germany are a result of climate change. “The normal seasons no longer exist. The first snow came much too early. And now we’re sitting at temperatures of ten degrees plus.” The left-wing politician also believes other urban planning measures are necessary. “We will have to work a lot more with storage,” Ramelow told the RND. The precipitation that comes down in autumn and winter is missing in summer when it doesn’t rain for a long time.
5:49 p.m. | circus can now stay on the banks of the Elbe
The Dresden Christmas Circus can stay in its place on the banks of the Elbe. Eva Jähnigen, head of the Dresden environmental department, explained that since the flood situation was easing slightly, an evacuation would now be disproportionate. “We as the city administration are left with the task of evaluating the highly risky situation that has arisen,” said Jähnigen. The city must be able to rely on the area being cleared in the event of flooding.
5:19 p.m. | circus takes legal action against threats of eviction
The Dresden Christmas Circus has applied for an interim injunction in urgent proceedings against the city of Dresden. An answer is expected from the court by Saturday. Due to the expected increase in water levels in Dresden, the city of Dresden had given the circus an ultimatum by 6 p.m. on Thursday to dismantle the tent and vacate the area on the banks of the Elbe. The circus did not comply with this request.
