Wind power should benefit from contract between Hydro and New York

The Gaspé is likely to contribute to the clean energy supply contract for New York City that Quebec has just won, believes the regional energy board.

The president of the Gaspésie-les Îles Wind Energy Board, Simon Deschênes, described the news that fell yesterday as excellent.

Simon Deschênes is optimistic about the possibility of seeing the region benefit from this 20-year contract.

First, the government and Hydro-Quebec will soon have the opportunity to demonstrate the competitiveness of wind energy: on the one hand thanks to the Apuiat project that Quebec has relaunched and with the upcoming call for tenders for the purchase a 300 megawatt block that will be produced by the project having submitted the best price.

The agreement between Hydro-Québec and New York does not seem to specify the share that would be devoted to wind energy. However, Simon Deschênes notes that an energy shortage was already anticipated even before the signing of the contract.

The tender for the 300 megawatt block is due out by the end of 2021.
