Today, we can only remember the time when the MP3 format, which represents a lossy but relatively high-quality compression of audio into files that were about a tenth the size of the original data from the Audio CD, has spread. At that time, we had computers that were often barely enough to play, and Winamp was by far the most popular player at the time, before it swelled and gradually disappeared from the scene.

But now there’s the Winamp Community Update Project (WACUP), a project set up by former Winamp developer Darren Owen to work on a version of Winamp WACUP. From BleepingComputer we learn that a new beta version is on the way, which is to be released later this year. But will there still be interest in it in the world of streaming music, which few people bother to store on local discs or perhaps even burn? –

The last version of Winamp 5.8 was released in 2018, but it was not officially released and it was a one-time affair. Although the company Radionomy, which still owns Winamp, said at the time that it had big plans with it, we did not see anything from it and we will not see it now, because it is the work of the WACUP community.
WACUP has already launched on the web Preview version 1.0.21.7236 and a new version of the site appeared this week winamp.com with a new logo where we can sign up for beta testing with the beta available “soon”. However, it is not clear what this software will offer us and whether it will continue to build on an old version of the player like Winamp 5.8, or it will be something fundamentally new. According to the website, however, the new Winamp should also become a platform through which the authors will be able to address their audience, ie it will not only be about consumption, but also about creation.
