Munich – The New York Jets won the backup quarterback duel and thus responded again with a victory after a loss to the New England Patriots. After a balanced first half, the team from the “Big Apple” beat the Chicago Bears 31-10 (17-10).
Mike White started with the Jets because Zach Wilson didn’t figure out how to take public accountability a week ago after his recent poor performances. For their part, the Bears were without Justin Fields with a shoulder injury, while his replacement Trevor Siemian injured his lats in warmups but bit his teeth.
In the very first round, White showed what he was made of. Sparkling clean, he drove “Gang Green” across the field and fed Garrett Wilson for an eight-yard touchdown, despite a catch by his opponent.
Bears Spin Game – Jets-Holder Fails FG Attempt
The Bears at least made it all the way to the red zone, but then had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Cairo Santos. But early in the second quarter, the visitors also got their touchdown, following a four-yard pass from Siemian to Byron Pringle.
When the Jets called to tie it up with a 36-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein, Zuerlein’s starter slipped. Braden Mann slid the rain-soaked egg between his fingers. After all, he still saved the day by throwing the ball forward as it went down. The result: incomplete pass and turnover on drawdowns.
Wilson with touchdown over 54 yards – Jackson was injured
But for New Yorkers, it felt like a good morning experience. Because on the next drive, Wilson caught the ball again and ran it back 54 yards to the end zone, also benefiting from injured safety Eddie Jackson’s foot in this scene. Before halftime, Zuerlein grabbed a 57-yard field goal to go 17:10.
Both offenses started the second half under caution before White threw his third touchdown pass – over 22 yards to Elijah Moore. This is the first time a team has really stood out. And then he slammed the floor as well as Ty Johnson fought his way through the Bears defense for a total of 32 yards.
Zuerlein tried again in the last quarter from 53 yards, but the egg flew wide to the right of the posts. No problem, there wasn’t much left on the other side. Siemian ended the game with an interception by CJ Mosley.
White and Wilson deliver for the Jets
White impressed with 315 passing yards for three touchdown passes in his first game of the season. Rookie Wilson also put his mark on the game with 95 receiving yards for two receiving touchdowns. On the downside, Siemian had 179 passing yards for a touchdown pass on an interception. Equanimeous St. Brown was not a factor with seven receiving yards.
While it was New York’s seventh win in eleven games, Chicago lost for the fifth straight game and is now 3-9. The Bears continue next Sunday with the division duel against the Green Bay Packers. The Jets simultaneously face the Minnesota Vikings.
