Wimbledon will replace lines judges; bet on electronic system

London. Wimbledon will break with tradition and replace linesmen with an electronic system starting next year, the All England Club confirmed this Wednesday.

The spectacle of immaculately dressed linesmen, standing or crouching at the sides and behind the grass courts, has been a feature of the Grand Slam tournament for 147 years.

The electronic line announcement was first used as an experiment at the ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan in 2017 and was adopted more widely during the Covid-19 pandemic. It will be used on all courts at ATP Tour events starting in 2025.

The Australian Open and the United States Open have already replaced line judges with the electronic system, although the French Open continues to rely on the human eye.

Wimbledon said “Hawk Eye Live Electronic Line Calling” (Live ELC) will also be used in the qualifying tournament.

“After reviewing the results of the tests carried out this year at the championships, we consider that the technology is sufficiently robust and that the time is right to take this important step in the search for maximum precision in our refereeing,” he said in a statement. the chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Sally Bolton.

“For the players, it will offer them the same conditions in which they have played in other events on the circuit,” he added.

The decision, while popular with players, will sadden traditionalists and will likely spell the end of arguments over line charges, which are part of Wimbledon folklore. It will also mark the end of “hawkeye” challenges, where players can ask for a video review of a close call, also popular with fans.
