Other seeds who also won in the first round included No. 4 Paula Badosa, No. 5 Maria Sakkari, No. 12 Jelena Ostapenko, and No. 33 Zhang Shuai.

It was Nadal’s first match since conquering Roland-Garros and the three weeks of inactivity sometimes appeared: he finished the match with 41 unforced errors against 23 winners.
For his part, Grigor Dimitrov withdrew from his first-round match against American Steve Johnson after being visited by a sports therapist for a leg injury.
The 18e seeded won the first set 6-4, but trailed 5-2 in the second. The 31-year-old Bulgarian then stopped playing on court number 2.
