Wimbledon 2021 issues statement on Monday’s programming backlash

Manic Monday is the second Monday at the Wimbledon Championships, one of the most exciting days for tennis fans around the world. It is a day in which all the players remaining in the draw, both men and women, play on the same day.

But since that’s the case, scheduling all the best players in one day becomes a compelling challenge. At this year’s Championships, the tournament received a strong backlash about its schedule.

In essence, the All England Club assigned British wild-card contestant Emma Raducanu the third game on court number 1 instead of second-seeded in the men’s draw Daniil Medvedev.

In a surprising turn of events, the 18-year-old retired with a 6-4, 3-0 loss, while Medvedev’s match was suspended due to rain. Although the future cannot be predicted, many fans were upset by his planning.

Consequently, the tournament issued a statement to clarify its position.

First, The Championships congratulated Emma on an extraordinary performance during the fortnight.

Despite the fact that it came out in an undesirable way, it won over many British and world tennis fans. Additionally, the statement read about the complexity of scheduling and assigning courts.

They also added that while they make a fair assessment, the British climate and the longevity of tennis matches may hamper their plan. This is what the statement said. “With regard to scheduling, as always, scheduling the order of play for each day at The Championships is a complex operation, and while we are very careful in scheduling matches and assigning courts on a daily basis, it is not an exact science.

“All decisions are made fairly and in the best interest of the tournament, the players, the spectators and our global broadcast audience in the background, but the unpredictable nature of match lengths and the British weather can and will cause disruptions in Any Time”

In conclusion, Australian Ajla Tomljanovic would now have to achieve two nights in a row. He will then face fellow countryman and world number one Ashleigh Barty for a spot in the semi-finals.

As for the men’s calendar, on Tuesday the suspended match between Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz would resume. The winner will face Roger Federer the next day. Do you think the Maniac Monday schedule at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships was fair?
