In order to pay tribute to all the women who have marked the history of the mining industry and serve as an inspiration for future generations seeking to transcend in the sector, Women in Mining- WIM Perú presented the second volume of “Mineras del Bicentenario : They inspire us 2”, a publication that collects the stories of nine professional exemplars.
In an event held within the framework of International Women’s Day, Ana María Choquehuanca, Minister of Production of Peru, participated in the presentation of the book; Henry Luna Córdova, Vice Minister of Mines; Omar Chambergo, president of the Board of Directors of Osinergmin; ambassadors Gavin Cook (United Kingdom); Maree Ringland (Australia); Ms. Ysabel Blanco, Chargé d’Affaires of the Canadian Embassy in Peru; Forest Atkinson, representative of the Embassy of the United States of America; Karina Zevallos, president of the WIM Peru Board of Directors and Ángela Grossheim, executive director of the National Oil and Energy Mining Society.
As part of the program, the panel “Good practices and advances in gender equality in mining” was also held, moderated by Karina Zevallos, and with the participation of Lucía Giles, Manager of Administration and Human Resources at Hudbay. Peru; Patricia Quiroz, Legal Manager of Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde; Jenny Vento, Human Rights and Government advisor at Anglo American Quellaveco.
During the presentation, Minister Choquehuanca pointed out that female participation in the mining sector is key to economic growth. According to figures shared at the event, women increase business profitability by 63% and creativity and innovation by 59%.
«To achieve equality in mining, we must join forces between the Government, companies and civil society. Despite the challenges, these warrior women have managed to make their way in the mining sector, demonstrating their love for the country,” she stated.
For his part, Vice Minister Luna also highlighted the participation of women in the mining formalization process. “21% of registrations in the Comprehensive Mining Formalization Registry correspond to women, who contribute to the development of the country through this activity,” he pointed out.
He added that there is still much to do to close inequality and gender gaps. Along these lines, she congratulated WIM Peru for being a strategic partner to promote greater participation of women in the mining sector.

In closing, Ambassador Gavin Cook stated that through the collection and publication of the stories of these women, WIM Peru shows once again its work of making visible the female contribution in the mining industry, and the ways in which women who work In this highly productive sector they can enhance their professional and personal growth.
