Wilshere returns to Arsenal academy as manager after retiring

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said he wants to apply the style and ideas of former club manager Arsene Wenger and current Mikel Arteta after taking charge of the club’s U-18 team after retiring as a footballer.

Wilshere, who made 197 appearances for Arsenal under Wenger and played alongside Arteta for five seasons, announced on Friday he was ending his injury-plagued career at the age of 30.

Wilshere said he wanted a team that would dominate possession and try to get the ball back as much as possible as quickly as possible.

“Working under Arsene and people like that, they instilled that in us from a young age,” he said. “If I can bring that, along with Mikel’s thoughts and ideas, I think it’s a recipe for success.”

Wilshere added that he hopes to make up for his lack of coaching experience with his knowledge of Arsenal’s youth academy, having come through the academy himself.

“I have experience of following in the footsteps of the players, going through the academy and making it to the first team,” Wilshere said.

“I think the first thing I have to do here is to focus on myself, on learning how to be a coach, but I think when you have ambition and you are hungry, it helps you learn faster and ultimately help the kids.” .
