Nyck de Vries will not drive for the Formula 1 teams of next year Williams. That became clear last Wednesday when the British racing stable Alexander Albon announced as successor to George Russell. According to team boss Jost Capito, that decision mainly has to do with experience.
Russell’s departure from Williams came as no surprise. A promotion from the talented Brit to Mercedes was a matter of time. This also brought opportunities for De Vries. The 26-year-old Dutchman became Formula 2 champion in 2019, after which he made the switch to Formula E. There he became world champion this year in the service of the Mercedes team. Given the close ties between Mercedes and Williams, a switch to Formula 1 seemed obvious.

Still, Williams chose Albon. The Thai Briton lost his at the end of 2020 Red Bull Racing-seat on Sergio Perez and is sidelined this season. Capito explains this decision: “Nyck deserves a seat in Formula 1, there is no doubt about it,” he said. Motorsport Week. “But if we have to take experience into account, Alex clearly has an advantage. That doesn’t mean he would do less well. In the end, Toto understands [Wolff, teambaas Mercedes.] also that we are not a B team or a satellite team. We have to make decisions that are good for us.”
De Vries – who still has a contract with the Mercedes Formula E team for next year – sees his chances shrinking to make the switch to the premier class. Only Alfa Romeo may still have a seat to forgive, but only if one says goodbye to Antonio Giovinazzi decision to make. In addition, there seem to be several candidates for that possible seat in the running.
