William Spaaij also in ‘Diary of a Shepherd Dog’ • musical news

Albert Verlinde Produkties and Toneelgroep Maastricht are pleased to announce today that William Spaaij can also be seen in the spectacle musical from next May. Diary of a Sheepdog. In the performance, which can be seen in a pop-up theater in the MECC Maastricht, William will play the role of Lumens, a fellow chaplain who becomes a good friend of chaplain Erik Odekerke.

With the arrival of William Spaaij, the producers dare to speak of a star cast. It has already been announced that Angela Schijf, Joes Brauer, Suzan Seegers and Anne-Mieke Ruyten will play in this production, which can be seen exclusively in the MECC Maastricht next May and June. ‘Diary of a Sheepdog is a classic,’ says William Spaaij. ‘The whole of the Netherlands was in front of the tube. I always heard those stories from my parents. From the moment I became interested in being on stage myself, I immersed myself in the performances that have stood the test of time. Diary of a Sheepdog is a good example of this. I consider it an honor that I can participate in this.’ William plays Lumens, a fellow chaplain who becomes a close friend of chaplain Erik Odekerke, a role played by Joes Brauers.

Albert Verlinde is happy that William has been added to the cast. “William is a versatile actor,” Albert says. ‘Both in front of and behind the scenes, he has earned his spurs in the musical world. He takes that experience with him and everyone benefits from it. I can’t wait for us to rehearse with this amazing cast. It is special to make this performance, also because it is our 15e performance is where we will work together. It will be more than worth it.’ Director Servé Hermans: “Chapelan Lumens is a flamboyant figure. Someone who on his own immediately fills the room upon entering. When I saw William Spaaij play the role of Max Detweiler in The Sound of Music I knew right away that he possessed this very specific talent that we were looking for for this role. In addition, William’s enormous experience and great talent is an enrichment for Diary of a Sheepdog.”

The story
In Diary of a Sheepdog In 1914, the young chaplain Erik Odekerke joined a religious community in Geleen. A small agricultural village in Limburg that is ruled by the notary, the gentleman farmer and the pastor. Due to the rise of coal mines in Limburg, the rich Roman life is coming under increasing pressure. Clumsy, naive Erik tries to survive in the Catholic village. But despite his good intentions, he upsets many people.

The script of this new musical is written by André Breedland, the music is by Ad van Dijk and Martin Michel is responsible for the staging. The direction is in the hands of Serve Hermans.
